THE island will host ‘1.4 Billion Reasons’ – a presentation about global poverty – during this year’s March Fairtrade Fortnight.
The presentation – being hosted in association with the Manx charity the One World Centre and the Manx Co-operative – will be held on Tuesday, March 1, at the Manx Museum lecture theatre, Douglas, and will focus on what has been described as the ‘simple, yet vital’ actions that people can take to end the extreme poverty that affects 1.4 billion people worldwide.
Rather than asking for donations, the educational campaigning organisation Global Poverty Project says it seeks to inspire responsibility and positive action within individuals. The presentation will seek to explain how people’s everyday actions – what people learn, say, buy, give and do – can be connected to the ending of extreme poverty.
The 90-minute presentation will look at how a lack of food, clean water, basic sanitation, healthcare and education can rob a person of their dignity and potential.
Katie Keenan, from the One World Centre – based in St John’s, which seeks to raise awareness of issues of global poverty, inequality and injustice – said: ‘We’re really excited to be involved with the GPP Manx launch.
‘The 1.4 Billion Reasons presentation challenges us to realise the concept of a global community, where, in a fundamentally connected world, our future success depends upon ensuring that all people are able to live lives of opportunity.’
Katie added: ‘Ideally, as broad an audience as possible [will attend]. It’d be great to see people already engaged in the issues come along and perhaps find new ways to communicate and find out what can be done, but it would also be exciting to see people who are interested but don’t know where to start.’
Working in partnership with leading charities, community groups and organisations, the GPP has launched its presentation in countries all around the world, receiving high-profile support for its clear and pragmatic objectives.
The Isle of Man launch on March 1 will be presented by GPP co-founder Simon Moss, a leading campaigning and community education expert.
He has contributed his expertise on development issues at some of the world’s leading conferences including the G20, the World Economic Forum and the Clinton Global Initiative.
Simon will also be speaking to sixth formers in all of the secondary schools, King William’s College, Castletown and the Isle of Man College, Douglas, while he’s in the island.
The presentation at the lecture theatre is at 7.30pm and is free, but tickets will be available from the Manx Museum and the One World Centre, Thie Garey Ny Cloie, Foxdale Road, St John’s.
It has been arranged to purposely coincide with Fairtrade Fortnight (February 28-March 13), marking the Isle of Man’s third year as a Fairtrade Island.
The presentation is co-ordinated by the One World Centre and sponsored by the Manx Cooperative – Gillian Hannah from the Co-operative will also be in attendance to talk about Fairtrade.
