Value Added Tax: Tampon Tax abolished

This news release is issued to publicise changes made to the rate of VAT on women’s sanitary products often referred to as the ‘tampon tax’.

With effect from 1 January 2021, a zero rate of VAT applies to women’s sanitary products. This follows similar changes announced in the UK and is required under the terms of the Customs and Excise Agreement.

It has been estimated the move will save the average woman nearly £40 over her lifetime, with a cut of 7p on a pack of 20 tampons and 5p on 12 pads.
