Business leaders from across the Island gathered recently at “Life in the Fast Lane – Managed & Delivered” a business briefing at which Manx Telecom unveiled its latest technology. The event was also attended by The Honourable Allan Bell, MHK, and Minister for Economic Development, who gave a broad picture of the government’s commitment to telecoms technology, and the central role it plays in the development of the Island’s economy.
Top of the agenda came news that Manx Telecom has upgraded its connections between the Island and the rest of the world to provide higher capacity and even more resilient connectivity for customers. The new network, which goes live this month, will offer up to 10 Gbps (Giga bits per second) capacity for multi-media, voice, and data communications via a range of Leased Line, Ethernet and Multi-Point Labelled Switching (MPLS) services. A key feature of the upgraded network is an increased number of Points of Presence – in the Isle of Man, Manchester, London, Dublin and Belfast – offering customers a greater choice of locations from which to take global services to and from.
“We don’t hold these events often – and only do so when we believe we have something significant to say,” said Manx Telecom Managing Director, Mike Dee. “However, we felt that the news about our new network was something worth shouting about, especially as connectivity is at the core of most businesses, as more and more commerce moves online. We also wanted to give our customers better options for high speed European, Transatlantic, and Asian connectivity, so alongside the new circuitry, we have revised our pricing structure for connectivity products to offer more choice and even better value for money. Finally, thinking of ‘Isle of Man plc’ we know the announcements we are making today will play a major role in helping the Island win its share of global business and inward investment, both now and in the future.”
Manx Telecom also announced that, in August, it will launch several new products and services, including Intelligent Voice, a new “virtual private exchange” which offers an alternative to traditional customer-owned PBX equipment, enabling companies to move their telephony “into the cloud”. “Intelligent Voice is one of a new generation of products which utilise cloud technology, which means that companies don’t have to invest in the traditional hardware associated with communications technology,” said Andy Pirie, Manx Telecom Corporate Solutions Manager.
“Instead, they can lease a cloud-based service such as Intelligent Voice which offers them both cost effective feature-rich telephony and unrivalled flexibility. We feel sure that it will have huge appeal to businesses big and small.”
Business Continuity was also featured with the launch of a new portfolio of disaster recovery solutions aimed at helping companies ensure that they can continue to operate in the event of a major disaster, or a prolonged disruption to their business.
“These days,” says Andy Pirie, “even a small disruption to IT or communications systems can have cataclysmic consequences for any sized company. By combining Manx Telecom’s resources and experience in telephony, data hosting, connectivity, plus our new 118 seat Business Continuity Centre, we have developed a new range of business continuity solutions. At the most basic level, we can offer companies the assurance that their data is safe, and can provide an operational base from which to work. Going even further, using cloud technology, we can provide seamless remote working to allow a company to keep operational under a whole range of circumstances, from a natural disaster, to an office relocation. All our business continuity services, and indeed all our products and services, are backed up by the largest and most skilled team of communications specialists on the Isle of Man. In addition, we operate the Island’s only 24x7x365 Network Operations Centre, all of which gives us an unrivalled ability to design, install, and manage business communications systems.”
Summing up a packed presentation, Managing Director, Mike Dee had no doubts about the role technology will play in the success of every business, and of the Isle of Man.
“At Manx Telecom, we know that the key to success lies in investment – and over the years our capital expenditure has been of a nature and on such a scale that I’m proud to say the Island has a communications infrastructure which many larger countries would envy. We also know that technology alone won’t bring success, our customers want choice and value from joined up solutions, and we know they value Manx-based customer service – while the technology may change, these aspects of our operation never will.”
