Why Facebook Should Not Replace Your Website

Facebook Isle of Man – Web Solutions offers: Facebook Pages Isle of Man, Small Business Websites Isle of Man, New Business Websites Isle of Man, Web marketing Isle of Man

Facebook is an excellent way to market our business and connect with customers. It’s also pretty easy to manage since most people have a Facebook account and are comfortable using it. However, it is a mistake to make this your "small business website" and this article will explain why.

Flexibility
Facebook is in the business of marketing Facebook, not your business. While you may be able to make some modifications to your Facebook page, you won’t have total control over our brand essence. There will still be a Facebook experience running in the background, reminding people that they are interacting with Facebook just as much as they are your brand. Having our own website will allow you to communicate on our terms and in your own style. It will also provide you with a way to reinvent yourself and make iterations as your business grows. A website is a much more fluid communication and branding channel than a Facebook page. If you want to make a change to your website you can do so easily using a new theme, colour, font etc…you won’t have these same options using Facebook.

Analytics
Facebook provides some tools to help you track interactions but they are know where as deep as a website analytics package. Google analytics is a free service that allows you track every single interaction on your website; including how people found you in the first place. Things like Keywords, Links, Referrals and the like are not included in Facebook analytics and this information is incredibly valuable to have. Why would you want limit your ability to learn from your website? I can’t think of one good reason to do so.

Integration
While Facebook does have several applications and modules that can be added to a page, they do not have everything that a small business needs to integrate completely. A big part of any online marketing strategy is being able to integrate and syndicate your website with multiple platforms. These platforms might be Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube or any other 3rd party service; could even be your merchant account or back-office software. Having your own website will provide a way for you to make the most of every integration and syndication opportunity available to you.

Now this is not to say that Facebook should not be leveraged as part of your small business marketing strategy – it just should not be a substitute for a website. We recommending adding Facebook components like a share or like button to every website we create, it’s essential. And sure, Facebook is adding new features all the time, but they are still Facebook’s features, not yours. Having your own website will provide a deeper level of branding, data and integration points for your business than Facebook can.
