PEEL is aiming to be the first town in the island to provide free Wi-Fi internet access for residents and visitors.
The commissioners are planning on submitting an application for a free wireless internet connection to be made available as part of regeneration plans to modernise the town.
Phase one of the project will see the introduction of a Wi-Fi internet connection along West Quay and halfway across the promenade, ending just before the junction with Stanley Road.
To allow this to happen, the next step is for the application to go to the western area committee of the town and village regeneration fund for their approval.
If approved, internet service provider Wi-Manx will set a start date for work on installing the Wi-Fi antennas to lampposts in the area.
The internet connection would allow residents and tourists to connect free of charge to websites, including government, local authority and charity and trust websites.
Peel Town Commissioners are working with McGarrigle and Jackson (M&J) on plans for the regeneration of Peel town centre.
M&J has submitted, on the commissioners’ behalf, an application for the full funding of the scheme in the sum of £2.2m.
The government has set aside £8m for town and village regeneration.
Peel commissioner Rodger Gimbert said: ‘If the project is approved, this will be the first town in the island to provide access to the internet for visitors and residents.
‘The system will allow people to access modern systems such as Facebook to upload pictures from their holiday and to keep in touch with people when they are visiting the island.’
Grants available from the town and village regeneration scheme range from under £10,000 to more than £100,000. The cost of installing the Wi-fi system with Wi-Manx would be £9,105. The application will go in front of the western committee tomorrow (Wednesday).
Mr Gimbert, said: ‘Peel Online [the commissioners’ website] will be the home page and the Wi-Fi will allow visitors to log on to find things to do in Peel, such as booking a meal in the Creek Inn, visiting attractions or reserving a book in the library.
‘This will help visitors to see what is available in Peel and also around the island via the government, local authority and charity/trust websites.’
Wi-Fi offers the ability for a computer or modern mobile phone to access a network or the internet without needing a physical cable connection. Institutions with an open Wi-Fi connection can promote goods and services through web pages sent to wireless devices.
